Trapeze’s first three albums from 1970 – 1972, recorded for the Threshold label.
Plus a previously unreleased live set from 1973, recorded in Dallas, Texas, and an intimate Borderline show from 1992.
Formed from two bands from the Midlands, Finders Keepers with Mel Galley (guitar / vocals), Dave Holland (drums) and Glenn Hughes (bass / vocals) as well as John Jones (vocals / trumpet) and Terry Rowley (keyboards / guitar / flute) from The Montanas, Trapeze were discovered by 60s beat superstars The Moody Blues and signed to their own Threshold label, for which they recorded three albums, the first two of which were produced by John Lodge of The Moody Blues.
Their self-titled debut is closer to the psychedelic rock and progressive pop of the late 60s than to the blues- and soul-infused hard rock for which Trapeze are known. This can also be seen on their second album “Medusa”, on which the band reduced to the power trio of Galley, Holland and Hughes and finally found their final sound.
Trapeze released their third album “You Are The Music – We’re Just The Band”. Produced by Neil Slaven, the album features a number of notable guests, including B. J. Cole on steel guitar and Rod Argent on electric piano.
One of Trapeze’s most important strongholds in the USA was Texas, from where a previously unreleased recording of their performance in Dallas during the promotion of their third album was taken.
Glenn Hughes left Trapeze in 1973 to join Deep Purple. Mel Galley and Dave Holland kept the Trapeze flag flying for the rest of the 1970s, which are captured on the second volume of Trapeze’s complete recordings. Trapeze regularly re-formed with this classic three-piece line-up, most notably in May 1992 at London’s Borderline, captured here on CD 6 as “Welcome To The Real World”.
Alongside his impressive solo career, Glenn Hughes eventually formed Hughes / Thrall, joined Black Sabbath, worked with artists as diverse as Gary Moore, Joe Lynn Turner and KLF, founded both Black Country Communion and California Breed and fronted The Dead Daisies.
