Ella Fitzgerald’s “Songbook” albums, with their incomparable interpretations of the best songs by famous composers such as Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin and others, are the cornerstone of the Verve catalog and the true standard for jazz vocal recordings. As influential as these albums were to the history of jazz and American Popular Song, Ella Fitzgerald never released a live version of these songbooks. This groundbreaking recording, discovered in the private collection of producer Norman Granz, is the first time a songbook by the First Lady of Song has been released live.
This album is also a first in other respects: although she performed regularly at the Bowl, this is the first full-length concert by Ella to be released at that legendary venue It also documents the only time Ella collaborated with Paul Weston, the gifted arranger and conductor of her Irving Berlin Songbook album.
