Dave Brubeck, born in 1920, is celebrated as one of America’s greatest jazz pioneers. In the early 1950s, he formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet in California, gaining recognition in the state’s burgeoning jazz scene. His breakthrough came in 1961 with Take Five, composed by saxophonist Paul Desmond. The track’s distinctive 5/4 time signature made it a landmark in jazz and the first jazz single to sell over a million copies. Take Five is part of the 1959 album Time Out, a genre-defining masterpiece that solidified Brubeck’s place in jazz history.
