Bloodletting is the third studio album by the alternative rock band Concrete Blonde, released on May 15, 1990. Known for its gothic atmosphere and dark, introspective lyrics, the album marked a stylistic shift for the band, blending their alternative rock roots with a moody, almost cinematic soundscape.

The album features notable guest appearances, including R.E.M.’s Peter Buck, who plays mandolin on the poignant track “Darkening of the Light,” adding a delicate, ethereal texture. Other contributors include Andy Prieboy of Wall of Voodoo and Steve Wynn of Dream Syndicate, whose inputs enhance the album’s dynamic and eclectic sound.

The standout track, “Joey,” became their biggest hit, reaching the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its haunting melody and heartfelt lyrics about addiction encapsulate the emotional intensity of the album. Other notable songs include the brooding title track, “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song),” inspired by gothic lore, and the raw, bluesy “Caroline.”

Frontwoman Johnette Napolitano’s powerful, emotive vocals and poetic lyricism are complemented by James Mankey’s atmospheric guitar work and a dynamic rhythm section. Bloodletting explores themes of love, loss, addiction, and existential despair, all delivered with a compelling, noir-like aesthetic.

A critical and commercial success, the album has since become a cult classic, celebrated for its unique fusion of rock, goth, and blues influences, as well as the stellar contributions from its high-profile collaborators.
