As the 1960s came to a close, many listeners thought they had Jimi Hendrix all figured out. From 1967 to 1969, The Jimi Hendrix Experience had galvanized a generation with a dazzling mix of rock and blues. Leave it to Hendrix, then, to end the decade he helped define by burning it all down and starting again. On New Year’s Eve 1969 and New Year’s Day 1970, Hendrix took the stage at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East in New York for four sets with a new band—his old friend Billy Cox on bass and Electric Flag cofounder Buddy Miles on drums—and a new set of tunes meant to make listeners forget “Purple Haze” or “Foxey Lady.” This new material from a new group—formally named Band of Gypsys after an offhand remark at Woodstock—married Hendrix’s guitar heroics to more soulful, funkier musical ideas and lyrics that searched for inner peace and explicitly detailed a wish for universal love and understanding. While the group itself was short lived, breaking up a month later, their material anticipated the next bold steps that Hendrix was set to take on record before his tragic passing in 1970. Fans first heard Band of Gypsys on a self-titled LP drawn from the shows on January 1, 1970 and rush released that spring. Now, 50 years after those historic performances, Songs For Groovy Children presents all four sets in full, remixed from the original master tapes by Hendrix’s engineer Eddie Kramer and mastered by Bernie Grundman.
