Trout Mask Replica, the third album by Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band, is to be pressed on vinyl for the first time in nearly a decade. The 1969 album will be re-issued by Jack White’s Third Man Records.

Originally produced by Frank Zappa, the new re-issue has been re-mastered by Bob Ludwig from “crystalline-quality safety masters”, while the double vinyl is “fruitcake fish-scale coloured”. On top of that, the album’s iconic cover art has been reproduced from Cal Schenkel’s original photo.

Also included in the package is a copy of the epitaph Jack White wrote for Don Van Vliet – aka Captain Beefheart – on the occasion of his passing in 2010. Printed on “psychedelic silkscreen”, White’s poem originally appeared in the March 2011 edition of Mojo magazine.

The new edition also includes the first-ever re-pressing of the only single from the album, the French-only 7-inch ‘Pachuco Cadaver’ b/w ‘Wild Life’, which comes on white vinyl. And if that wasn’t enough, a tote bag and patch featuring the cover art, as well as an actual replica trout mask are also included in the package.

The limited-edition package is the latest installment in Third Man’s subscription program, The Vault, and is released on 30 April.

Recorded in 1969, Trout Mask Replica is widely regarded as the high water mark of Captain Beefheart And His Magic Band’s career. Nearly 50 years after its release, this is an album that still continues to divide audiences the world over. It’s certainly a challenging listen, thanks to its highly unconventional music style that includes elements of jazz, atonality and polyrhythms.

The album was made under stressful and notorious circumstances. With band leader Don Van Vliet assuming total creative and emotional control of his band, the Magic Band were subjected to eight months of cult-like communal living conditions as they practiced the complex pieces for up to 14 hours a day.

Trout Mask Replica was added to the United States National Recording Registry in 2011 by the Library of Congress.
