Vinyl LP reissue of this iconic electronic masterpiece!
Magnetic Fields (French title: Les Chants Magnétiques, a clever play on the words chant [song] and champ [field]) is the third mainstream album by Jean Michel Jarre (his fifth album overall), released on Disques Dreyfus on May 22, 1981.
This album was among the first to incorporate sampling as a key musical element, marking a shift from the sound of Jarre’s earlier works. Despite this evolution, his distinctive style remains unmistakable throughout the album.
For this project, Jarre drew partial inspiration from the works of Andy Warhol and his fascination with the reproducibility of digital sound. The opening track is a lengthy piece divided into three distinct movements, with the slower second movement heavily utilizing samples. This approach anticipated the sound Jarre would explore further in his 1984 album, Zoolook.
Magnetic Fields reached #6 on the UK charts and #98 on the US charts.
