While most great rock albums thrive on their energy, At Fillmore East is more comparable to a great live jazz session. What comes across here is, above all, the fun the musicians involved had playing together on stage during those three concert evenings in March 1971. But the wonderful thing about this album, which brought the Allmans so much recognition, is that it not only offers the finest rock music, but is also incredibly well produced. Tom Dowd, who had also recorded the Allman Brothers’ second studio album, was on hand with a 16-track tape machine and captured the band – in an unusual lineup with two lead guitarists and two drummers.
